Schiermonnikoog is the smallest of the inhabited Wadden Islands and holds the title of one of the broadest beaches in Europe — stretching up to 5 kilometres wide at low tide. The entire island is a National Park, making it one of the most pristine and protected natural environments in the Netherlands. Cars are not permitted; visitors travel by ferry and then explore on foot or by bicycle, creating an almost meditative tranquillity. The beach constantly changes shape due to wind and tides, offering a raw, wild North Sea experience unlike any other. The single village on the island is endearingly small and quiet, with just a handful of hotels and restaurants.
